Mother's Day 2022

Celebrate your special mother-daughter bond by twinning with striking, uniquely detailed bags

It may sound like a cliché, but content creator Zhanna Red and her mother, Anna, really do look more like sisters than parent-and-child. Dressing in matching linen shirts and loose-cut trousers, they complete their twinning outfits with our Aviary shoulder bag in avocado and dark moss - the bag's stylish ruched finish and eye-catching beaded handle complement the effortless style of both mother and daughter.

Talk about your matching styles and how it started.

Anna:

It started from way back. When Zhanna was little, she wanted to dress like me, and now that she is older, I really look up to her taste and want to dress like her. So I think it (matching) was always something we did! I love how it changed with age.

Zhanna:

My mum was always into fashion, and read the coolest magazines. And of course I wanted to emulate that when I was younger. But now she is like my sister and I love that we can match and wear the exact same thing and it will look different yet still so cool and similar on both of us!

How you have influenced each other on your own individual fashion styles? What have you guys taught each other about style and fashion?

Anna:

An outfit can be very simple, ordinary, and basic, but your mood and your personality is what carries it. It isn't what you wear, it's how you wear it. And Zhanna really taught me that! I sometimes see her pick up something I think I would never wear, but when I see her in it, I instantly love it.

Zhanna:

My mother taught me to not blindly follow trends, and to stick to classic silhouettes. If you’re not dressing like everyone else, that is good, and not bad! It is good to stand out when you are being true to your own fashion sense.

What are the similarities and differences between your styles?

Anna:

I always dress for the weather, no matter if I really want to wear something else. Dressing for the weather is key for me, whereas you (Zhanna) would rather wear a specific item no matter what the weather is. If it's raining and you want to wear heels that day, you will!

Zhanna:

I think a big difference is how adventurous we are with accessories. I am personally very simple, I have my minimal gold jewellery but you (Anna) are not afraid to style what you wear with really cool and bright jewellery.

To Daughter: What is one thing about your mum that you look up to?

Her continuous positivity. No matter the day, what is going on, or what she is feeling, she will always be with a smile on her face and lighting up the room. I really admire that. I can get very moody, but my mum is always a ray of sunshine!

To Mother: What is one thing of yourself that you see in your daughter?

Kindness and confidence. I think those are the two most important things a woman should be — kind to herself and others. She carries herself and her choices with confidence, and I think that is something that I see in her that I have in myself.

Based in Stockholm, fashion designer and content creator Marlene Abraham has a quintessentially Scandinavian personal style that is minimal and timeless. Her daughter Kayla has certainly inherited her innate sense of style. Dressed in chic all-black outfits, this fashionable mother-and-daughter duo choose to match with our Alcott scarf chain-link shoulder bags in dark moss and pumpkin.

Talk about your matching styles and how it started.

Marlene:

I think it started when Kayla was old enough to start borrowing my clothes around the age of 11-12. Since then, her style has evolved a lot. She has always dressed in a boyish way though.

Kayla:

To be honest, our styles have always been very different. It's only in the latest year or two that we've started to match and share clothes. I would mix and match her more "feminine or elegant" pieces with my more "masculine or baggy" clothes. Then, I started noticing my mum exploring and rummaging through my wardrobe - something I could never have imagined before.

How you have influenced each other on your own individual fashion styles? What have you taught each other about style and fashion?

Marlene:

I find Kayla’s style interesting and refreshing. She buys mostly secondhand (clothing), which she has opened up my eyes to. It’s easier to dress when you prefer a more oversized silhouette. Kayla is all about oversized clothes, and I like a balance with a fitted top or bottom.

Kayla:

My mum owns a fashion brand so I’ve been influenced by her style my whole life. Although, during my early years I would try to rebel against it. I would wear big baggy t-shirts and huge pants — and meanwhile, my mum would be designing clothes for the royal family! As time went by, my mum’s style became more casual and trendier, and that’s when I started to feel inspired by her style. Not only has she influenced my style but she’s also taught me to dress sustainably and how we can always fight climate change, even with what we choose to wear.

What are the similarities and differences between your styles?

Marlene:

My style is a bit more feminine and Kayla’s is more boyish.

Kayla:

If my mum opts for the elegant, classy look, I’ll go for a messy, baggy outfit. In other words, I’ll go around looking like a bag all day and mum will look like she just stumbled out of a fashion magazine. But all jokes aside, I think the only major difference is the sizing of our clothes, otherwise we could pull off the same outfits.

To Daughter: What is one thing about your mum you look up to?

That’s going to be a tough one since the only right answer is everything. But one thing about my mum that I admire to the core is her discipline. I’ve never met anyone as disciplined and mentally strong as my mum. It baffles me every day what she’s able to do with the pure power of will.

To Mother: What is one thing of yourself that you see in your daughter?

When it comes to fashion, she loves travelling to places like New York, London and LA and she’s drawn to people with a cool, offbeat personal style, just like I have always been. Otherwise we are both really into a healthy lifestyle and sports. Kayla is aiming to be a professional tennis player and I was in the national team for rhythmic gymnastics.
